Do I Adore Cristiano Ronaldo?

15 Jan

A new friend of mine from facebook asked me this question. He said that all Manchester United’s fans adore Cristiano Ronaldo.

I do not admire him very much. Congratulation to him for scoring 42 goals last season, but he won’t be scoring that much this season. Congratulations to him for being named FIFA World Footballer of the Year, Ballon d’Or for the European Footballer of the Year, Football Writers’ Player of the Year, PFA Player of the Year and FifPro World Player of the Year; but he won’t be getting all that again next year.

If I’m Sir Alex Ferguson, I would sell him at the end of this season if the price is right. I won’t accept offers less than £100 million (rumours said that Real Madrid is willing to shell out 85 million Euros for him). I think Manchester City will spend more than that for the Portugal star. Then I will give Luís Carlos Almeida da Cunha (Nani), Park Ji-Sung and Zoran Tosic a chance to be the next Player of the Year.

Anyway, I still think Cristiano Ronaldo is better than Kaka, Lionel Messi and Fernando Torres last season. I dare say that the 3 can’t score 42 goals in a season.

Cristiano Ronaldo goals statistics (2007/08):
English League – 31 goals/34 games
Cup – 3/3
League Cup – 0/0
Europe – 8/11
Other – 0/1
Total – 42 goals/49 games

Lionel Andrés Messi goals statistics (2007/08):
Spanish League – 10 goals/28 games
Europe – 6/9
Total – 16 goals/40 games

Fernando José Torres Sanz goals statistics (2007/08):
English League – 24 goals/33 games
Europe – 6/11
Total – 33 goals/46 games

Ricardo Izecson dos Santos Leite (Kaká) goals statistics (2007/08):
Italian League – 15 goals/30 games
Europe – 3/9
Total – 19 goals/41 games

AFF Suzuki Cup Semi-Finals

21 Dec

Vietnam defeated Singapore 1-0 in the second leg semi-final of the AFF Suzuki Cup at the National Stadium. A mistake by Ismail Yunos cost the lion the chance to win the Asean football title three times in a row.

Anyway, this year is not ours since we lost Khairul Amri (broken metatarsal), Fazrul Nawaz (torn knee ligaments), Qiu Li (Fifa ruled him ineligible), Aleksandar Duric (fractured a bone) and John Wilkinson (calf injury). Noh Alam Shah is not 100% fit as he still carrying a niggling hamstring problem.

We will be strong the next time we plays (yeah.. we going to have more foreign import players… LOL).

Uzbekistan is leading right now with nine points from three games. Saudi Arabia will be second if they beat Lebanon at home today. For Singapore to qualify for the final round, they really need to get three points from Uzbekistan at their hometown this Saturday (June 7th, 2008), then a win against Saudi Arabia at home one week later on June 14th and the last match to the Lebanon away on June 22nd.

This is the first time Singapore face Uzbekistan. Singapore had met Saudi Arabia in six occasions losing five games, draw once, scored two goals and conceded fifteen goals. Beat Lebanon once, lost once, scored four and let in three goals.

Manchester United The Ultimate Champions!

22 May

I was at the Crab Shack in the City to watch the first all-English Champions League final between my favourite club Manchester United and Chelsea. Reached there at 2am and the chairs were mostly taken or reserved.

We were shocked that the number 13 Park Ji Sung is not in the team list. Maybe he talked too much to the press about Asian footballer making big in the final or whether he is not match fit, we still do not know.

As I expected, Manchester United played the 4-4-2 formation with Owen Hargreaves playing on the right midfield. Maybe Sir Alex Ferguson decided to use him there to minimise the danger of Ashley Cole.

We cheered and roared when Cristiano Ronaldo scored in the 26th minute with a wonderful header and claimed his 42nd goal of the season. Carlos Tevez should has sealed the game but Manchester United backline went to sleep and allowed a stupid error to award Frank Lampard an easy goal in the 44th minute.

Second half saw Chelsea dominated with Didier Drogba left-foot shot was saved by the Van der Sar’s left-hand post. It was a nerve shredding moment to see Manchester United keep on defending for the next 45 minutes. Ryan Giggs broke Sir Bobby Charlton’s all-time appearance record with his 759th match appearance before the extra-time.

John Terry saved Ryan Giggs’ shot off the line in the 1st half extra-time while Frank Lampard’s shot hit the crossbar earlier in the game. In the 2nd half, Didier Drogba received a red card for slapping Nemanja Vidic in the face. Extra-time ended with the score line still 1-1.

As usual Cristiano Ronaldo did his expected trick by stopping before he kicks the ball but was saved by Petr Cech. I feel that this time he took longer time to kick the ball since Petr Cech did not make any move before he actually kick the ball. He should had just blast it toward the goal instead of risking the team. Luckily John Terry slipped and saw his shot went wide.

Sudden death, 4-4, Anderson Luis de Abreu Oliveira put United back in front, firing straight and hard. Salomon Kalou, Ryan Giggs scored to give the score line 6-5. It is Nicolas Anelka turn to take the last final decisive spot-kick. All pressure goes to Nicolas Anelka and Van der Sar guessed it correctly and Manchester United is once again the Kings of Europe! (1968 1999, 2008)

I reached home at 6.30am thanks to Jalibhoy who fetch and sent me home.

Manchester United (4-4-2): Van der Sar, Brown (Anderson 120), Ferdinand (c), Vidic, Evra, Hargreaves, Carrick, Scholes (Giggs 87), Ronaldo, Rooney (Nani 100), Tevez.

Chelsea (4-3-3): Cech, Essien, Carvalho, Terry (c), A Cole, Ballack, Makelele (Belletti 120), Lampard, J Cole (Anelka 98), Drogba, Malouda (Kalou 91).
